HIGHWAY 8 FLOOD REMEDIATION
In November 2021, an atmospheric river event caused devastating flooding impacting much of the critical road infrastructure of Highway 8, resulting in significant damage and subsequent need for repair. As the waters receded, the highway was left impassable in several locations due to sediment, large debris, and sections where lanes and bridges had been washed away.
RSI was part of the immediate local response, which lasted for a year following the weather event, in order to support restoring critical infrastructure to the impacted Communities along the corridors. Once the water levels subsided, we began the challenging process of restoring access. Crews were dedicated in the production, supply, hauling, and placement of rip rap across multiple sites to rebuild and stabilize the impacted areas.
Our efforts were vital for re-establishing connectivity for residents, including the First Nation Communities that have been greatly impacted by the disaster. After completing the initial phase of making the highway passable between Merritt and Spences Bridge, we undertook additional projects to reconstruct the highway's subgrade, subbase, base, and pavement at the first three severely damaged sites meeting and exceeding industry standards. These projects were essential in ensuring the highway’s long-term usability and functionality, helping to reconnect and support those along the corridor.
